WebAsyst Files: Questions & Answers

What is WebAsyst Files and what can I do with it?

WebAsyst Files is your online file storage for personal or corporate use. You can easily make the uploaded files accessible for your friends or colleagues. Many useful features allow quick and simple file uploads, quick creation of links to your files which can be sent over email or an instant messenger, or placed on your website or blog. Text documents and spreadsheets can be edited inside your web browser without the need to download and re-upload them.

Is there a batch upload feature?

WebAsyst Files allows you to select as many files as you need on your computer in the usual way, i.e. using the Ctrl or Shift key and the mouse cursor. The upload progress bar is displayed for each file. You can continue working with the previously uploaded files during the upload.

To make a batch upload faster, compress your files into a ZIP archive and use the "Extract from ZIP" menu item after the upload. In the same manner you can upload an entire hierarchy of subfolders with files inside them.

How many files can I upload?

With a free account you may upload a maximum of 100 files with a total size of no more than 100 MB. Should you need more space, choose the most suitable pricing plan from as low as $4.95 a month.

With the software installed on your own server (web hosting) the number and amount of files will only be limited by the server capacity.

Can I allow others to access my files?

To grant other persons access to your files, just save their login names and passwords and specify, what folders they are allowed to access. Each user's access rights to each folder can be set up individually. Several different levels of access are possible with WebAsyst Files:

  • Read — a user can only view the list of files inside a folder and download them.
  • Write — in addition to the "Read" permissions, a user can delete files, upload new ones, and change their descriptions.
  • Folder — all of the above and the ability to create and delete subfolders.

How many persons can manage files within an account?

A free account allows 2 persons to access and manage files. Should you need to invite more friends or colleagues, choose the most suitable pricing plan.

If you need to organize constant access to the account for a large number of users, consider purchasing WebAsyst Files as a PHP software that can be installed on your own server or a web hosting, instead of using an online service. In this case you will not be limited in the number of users in any way!

Can I just send a link to file without making someone a user?

Sure. You can create a link to a single file, several selected files, or an entire folder. Email this link or publish it on any web page.

I want to download many files at once. Is this possible?

The "Compress as ZIP and save" feature will be helpful in your case. Select several files or a folder and download them as a ZIP archive, it can then be easily unzipped using any suitable archiver.

Do I have to download a document to edit it?

Not necessarily. Most widely used types of text documents (Word, Excel, and OpenOffice text and spreadsheet documents) can be edited directly in your browser – this feature is powered by the Zoho online services. You will not need to download the file and re-upload it to your account.

Can I prevent other users from modifying the files I am working with?

Use the "Lock" command — the file will become "read-only", and no one except you will be able to delete/rewrite it until you "unlock" it.

I often make changes to certain files. Can I keep version history?

When you upload another file with the same name, its older version is not removed — it is saved in the "version history". Any of the previously saved versions of each file can be downloaded and viewed at any time.

I would like to place a publicly accessible list of files on my website.

No problem — just create a "File List" widget in 3 mouse clicks and paste its HTML code to your website. The list of file names with links to the files will appear on you site, where anyone will be able to download them. The look of the file list can be adjusted to fit into your website design.

I need to allow my customers to upload files containing order descriptions to the server without the use of email.

Your customers can easily upload such files to your server, even if they are not users of your WebAsyst account. To achieve that, just place the "Online Folder" widget (web form) on your website. Files uploaded through the widget will be automatically saved in the specified folder of your WebAsyst Files account.

How secure are my file uploads?

To ensure the best performance, the encryption of data transferred over the internet is disabled for WebAsyst online services by default. If the protection of your files is a critical requirement, use the secure connection option (SSL). SSL connection is available for users of paid accounts only.

For the secure connection to work with WebAsyst Files installed on your own server or web hosting, an SSL certificate must be installed for your domain name.
