    WebAsyst Files: Questions & Answers

What is WebAsyst Files and what can I do with it?

WebAsyst Files is a place to store your documents and let others access them, if necessary. The many useful features of the service allow quick and simple file uploads, quick creation of links to your files which can be sent to friends and colleagues or placed on your webpage, editing text and spreadsheet documents inside browser without having to download, etc.

Which is right for me, online service or software version?

If you have never purchased hosting before, and PHP and MySQL abbreviations mean nothing to you, then you should use online service. Sign up for an account and start using it in less than a minute.

If you are a corporate customer, an IT manager, or web developer, you may prefer to purchase WebAsyst Files software (with 100% released source code) and install it on your own web server. Our scripts can be successfully installed on most hosting server configurations. The installation procedure is simple and thoroughly described.

    Is there batch upload?

Yes. The upload form allows you to select as many files as necessary on your computer using usual multiple object selection methods (holding down Ctrl or Shift buttons while clicking on files). Click on Upload and you will see progress bar for each file while it is being transferred. During upload process you can continue to work with other files.

    Are there file size limits?

Free online service account has a limit of 100 files, 100 Megabytes in total. If you need more space, you can always upgrade your free account for as low as $4.95 a month.

Software: The downloadable software version has no limits other than the size of your server's storage system.

How do I allow others to access my files?

Your WebAsyst account has a “Users” directory, where you can create new users and give them access rights to documents and folders of the account. Every user will have a personal login and password to enter the system. Once signed in, users may access only those parts to which they have been given access.

WebAsyst Files allows setup of access rights to each folder separately. There are several levels to be used:

    • Read — user can see list of files inside the folder and download them, but is unable to change their descriptions, delete or add them
    • Write — in addition to "Read" functions, user can change descriptions and delete files
    • Folder — all of the above and ability to create and delete sub folders

Can I just give a link to someone without making them a user?

Yes. You can make a link to a single file, several files or an entire folder. Email this link or publish it on any web page.

I want to download many files at once. Is this possible?

There is “Compress as ZIP and save” feature that can be helpful. Select several files or a folder and create ZIP file. Then download it and unzip locally.

Do I have to download file in order to edit it?

Not necessarily. Some file types (Word, Excel and OpenOffice text and spreadsheet documents) can be edited directly in your browser using WebAsyst Files integrated Zoho service. While viewing a list of files inside our service, click on Edit online link underneath file description and it will be opened in a new browser window. Once finished, it will be saved back to WebAsyst Files.

Can I prevent other users from changing files I am working with?

Yes. Use the "Lock" command in file's menu. File will switch to “read-only” mode and other users will not be able to delete/rewrite the file until you "Unlock" it.

I often make changes to certain files. Can I keep version history?

When you upload file to a folder with the same name as one of the existing files, its previous copy will be moved to version history and your latest version will become available inside folder view. Previous versions can be accessed via "Old versions" command in file's menu.

I have a page on my site where I need to place publicly available files. Is that possible with your service?

Of course. Choose necessary files or a folder and create "File List" widget. Paste its HTML code (just a couple of lines) to the page where you need it. Your website visitors will see a downloadable files list. You can even change look of the list to match your site's existing style.
